How many units of Botox do you actually need?

Typical ranges per area, why men need more, and how to read a quote so you can compare two clinics honestly.

This is the most common question at a first consultation, and it is often answered badly — either with a single number that ignores your anatomy, or with a package price that hides how much product you are actually getting. Here are honest ranges.

What changes your number

Muscle mass

This is the single biggest factor and it is not about age. A 34-year-old with a strong frontalis needs more than a 55-year-old with a weak one. Men typically need 1.5 to 2 times a woman's dose in the same area, because the muscles are physically larger.

How long you have been treated

Muscles that have been regularly relaxed for years become smaller and weaker. Long-term patients often drift downward — someone who started at 24 units in the glabella may sit comfortably at 16 after three years. Your dose should be reviewed, not repeated on autopilot.

What you want to keep

A full dose stops the movement. A deliberately lighter dose softens it and leaves expression intact. Neither is wrong — but they are different treatments at different prices, and you should be asked which one you want rather than assigned one.

How to compare two quotes

Per-unit pricing and per-area pricing are not comparable until you convert them. If a clinic charges $350 "per area", ask how many units that includes. If it is 20, you are paying $17.50 a unit. If it is 40, you are paying $8.75. The word "area" carries no fixed meaning and is often where the margin hides.

  • Ask for the unit count, in writing, before treatment
  • Ask which product — Dysport units are not Botox units
  • Ask whether the two-week review and any top-up is included
  • Be sceptical of a price that is far below market: under-dosing is the most common way to hit a low headline number

What it costs here

Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau are all $12 a unit; Daxxify is $15. The two-week review is included and any top-up needed to even out the result at that review is free. A typical first treatment of frown lines plus forehead runs $280–500.

Common questions

Why did another clinic quote me far fewer units?

Usually one of three reasons: they quoted per area rather than per unit, they are quoting Dysport units on the Dysport scale, or the dose genuinely is lower and will not last three months.

Can I start with less and add more?

Yes, and for a first treatment that is the recommended approach here. You are reviewed at two weeks and more can be added then. Adding is easy; removing is impossible.

Do I need the same number every time?

Not necessarily. Doses are reviewed each visit and long-term patients often need less over time as the treated muscles weaken.

Is there a maximum?

There are safe upper limits per session, and they are far above cosmetic doses — masseter and hyperhidrosis treatments use much more than facial work and remain well within them.
