Lip filler: what one syringe actually looks like
One millilitre is a fifth of a teaspoon. Here is what that actually does to a mouth — and why most first-timers should use half of it.

Placed in a mouth, it is a great deal, and the single most common mistake in lip treatment is using all of it on someone who needed half.
What each amount does
0.5 ml — the honest first treatment
Restores what has been lost rather than adding something new. Definition at the border returns, the lip carries light again, and the shape reads as rested. Most people around you will not identify what changed. This is where the majority of first-timers should start, and it is where a large share of them should stay.
1 ml — a visible change
A clear increase in volume that people will notice, though not necessarily attribute to filler if it is placed well. Appropriate for genuinely thin lips, for significant asymmetry, or for someone who has had filler before and knows how their tissue behaves.
More than 1 ml in one session
Rarely appropriate for lips alone. Tissue can only accommodate so much at once; pushing past that is how the flat, shelf-like upper lip happens, and it is also how product ends up above the border where it was never meant to sit. If a larger change is genuinely wanted, it is staged across sessions a month apart.
How long it lasts
Six to twelve months for most people. Lips move constantly and are exceptionally well supplied with blood, so filler breaks down there faster than anywhere else on the face. A fast metabolism, intense exercise and smoking all shorten it further.

Lip flip vs lip filler
They are unrelated treatments that get confused constantly. A lip flip is a few units of neuromodulator in the muscle above the upper lip; it relaxes that muscle so the lip rolls slightly outward, showing more of what you already have. It adds no volume, costs $80, and lasts around eight weeks. If your issue is that your upper lip disappears when you smile, a flip may be the entire answer — and it is a fraction of the cost of filler.
The safety net worth knowing about
Only hyaluronic acid fillers are used in lips here, and HA can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. If you hate the result, or if something migrates, it can be removed. That reversibility is not a marketing line — it is the reason permanent and semi-permanent fillers have no place in a mouth.
Common questions
Will it hurt?
Topical anaesthetic goes on first, and every filler used here contains lidocaine. Most people describe pressure rather than pain. Lips are more sensitive than other areas, and it is over in about twenty minutes.
How swollen will I be?
Noticeably, for two to three days, and the first day usually looks larger than the final result. Judge nothing before day fourteen.
Can I get it dissolved if I hate it?
Yes. Hyaluronidase breaks HA filler down within a day or two. Wait two weeks first — a great deal of what people want dissolved on day three is simply swelling.
Do lips get saggy if I stop?
No. Filler does not stretch tissue permanently at sensible volumes. Lips return to their previous state as the product breaks down. Chronic overfilling is a different matter, which is exactly why volumes are kept conservative.
